Ellenville Praises Its Police Force's Local Roots During Promotions

ELLENVILLE – Proud families gathered at village hall August 14 to witness two part-time Ellenville police officers, Harold Nunuvero and Kyle Reilly, promoted to full-time status.

"It's great to see his son following his footsteps," Ellenville Police Chief Phil Mattracion said regarding Reilly, whose father Bill Reilly recently retired from a long career as an officer in the same force.

Nunuvero, Mattracion continued, is the first full-time Latino officer the department has seen in over 40 years. The chief added how both officers, as well as half the entire Ellenville police force, were recent Ellenville High School graduates who still reside in the village.

Both the mayor, Jeff Kaplan, and Mattracion commented on the positive aspects of retaining young officers, and how tough it's become as talk of village dissolution has increased over the past year.

Mattracion also informed the village board that his department was the recipient of two state grants; one, for $10,000, would be used to purchase an electronic fingerprinting system, while a second would purchase $1,500 worth of infant car seats for donation to local families.

Trustees also okayed spending $6,260.34 to purchase tasers with a five year lease contract for unlimited batteries and cartridges.

In other news, village manager Joseph Stoeckeler said that the village and school district have agreed to split the costs associated with holding a referendum vote on October 3 in consideration of granting an easement of a district-owned sliver property off Berme Road for the construction of the rail trail. Each entity would pay $1,500.

Stoeckeler also noted that the county Economic Development Alliance approved the reallocation of Ellenville Million funds to include an additional $25,000 for the village façade program and $105,000 for a new grant writing/matching program.

Discussions continued regarding a proposed property tax auction to be held in October, with the board approving a September 15 deadline for tax delinquent property owners to enter into a repayment agreement with the village before facing the auction of their delinquent properties.
