Pine Bush Leads The Coming Season Of Great Harvest Festivals

REGIONAL – You can feel it in the weather, as the nights grow cool and the days stay warmish. You can see it in the bright blue skies and roiling high clouds, the brittle quality of the last spurt of greens in our forests. There's a yellowing in the fields.

The big seasonal festivals start kicking in this coming weekend, ever though Octoberfest is still a fortnight away (and starting in late September).

The Pine Bush Lions Club Harvest Festival, taking place right in the heart of the hamlet of Pine Bush, will run this Saturday, September 20, all day (with a rain date on Sunday), pulling locals and visitors out for arts and crafts, community information booths, a food court, loads of music and other live entertainment, and kids' activities including games. And did we forget about food? It'll be there in the form of local restaurants, farm stands, and harvest cornucopias.

Visit www.pinebushharvestfestival.i8.com for the full info... or just head on over to Pine Bush come Saturday morning. Also up for this weekend: A September 20 Autumn Day, 1864 living history event with historic reenactors interpreting a day from 200 years ago at New Paltz's Historic Huguenot district, complete with period outdoor activities such as croquet, races, and badminton, along with music and poetry readings. It's all free.

The Master Gardener program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County will host a Plant Sale on Saturday at their Xeriscape Garden at Ulster County Community College in Stone Ridge from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Biggest of all this whole weekend, and conveniently close to everything else, is the Extension's annual Hudson Valley Harvest Festival September 20-21 at the Ulster County Fairgrounds located at 249 Libertyville Rd. in New Paltz, a family-fun event featuring a farmers' market highlighting local farms, a kids play and activities area, a broad array of craft and food vendors, loads of great live local music, a pumpkin patch, live animal exhibits, contests, home and garden demos, a quality tag sale, and both Farm Olympic Games and a Classic Car Show. It all benefits Family of Woodstock... visit www.hvharvestfest.com for more information.

Finally, coming up the following weekends, will be the popular 12th Annual RVGA Barn Dance and Local Food Barbecue Saturday, September 27th at Duchess Farm in High Falls, from 4 to 10 p.m. in a fun-filled benefit for the Rondout Valley Growers Association, with food from local chefs... and square dancing. Call 626-1532 or visit www.rondoutvalleygrowers.org for advance tickets at a discount. Plus an Aroma Thyme Octoberfest right here in Ellenville... and the 29th Annual Giant Pumpkin Party and Children's Parade hosted by the Daniel Pierce Library in Grahamsville on Saturday, October 4.

Did we forget anything? Most certainly... but that's why we're starting early pegging this time of year, which many of us feel is our region's very finest.

And don't you forget that besides big events, there's plenty of great times to be had just driving around our area these coming weeks as we enter the time of fall colors. Stop by farm stands, enjoy the bounty! Be part of the cornucopia!! Be one with your home!!!
