Meet the Candidates Night on Tuesday was, hopefully, not a sign of things to come early next week on Tuesday. The turnout on the part of the residents to the Trudy Farber center in Ellenville was dismal, to put it mildly. In a country gripped by election fever, we would have thought that concerned citizens throughout the community would have flocked to get their chance to meet and question the candidates directly.
Of course, looking at which candidates actually bothered to make their way to the event on Tuesday was perhaps a larger sign of the apathy which appears to have gripped the town and village. The historic Ulster County election for its first executive and comptroller was underrepresented at best, featuring only one candidate of the possible four who could've appeared. We thank Len Bernardo for coming to our corner of the county, and shake our heads disapprovingly at the rest for eschewing Ellenville for Kingston — again, hopefully not a sign of things to come. Of course, an extra glare goes to comptroller candidate Elliott Auerbach for not even putting an appearance in at his own village's event.
So who do we endorse this November? We're not generally in the business of picking a candidate over another. Instead, we'd like to endorse the idea of voting itself. Make yourself heard and cast a ballot next week — after all, if the poor turnout this week is anything to go by, you may be the only one…
