Bushmen Start With A Win

Pine Bush football coach Jim Wright is upbeat about his team's performance in the 22-6 win over Washingtonville on September 5.

"First, we had a good defensive performance. That's a big reason for our success right there. There were some good matchups there for us that we took advantage of. I feel that we dominated on both defensive and offensive lines of scrimmage."

The first half produced few points, Pine Bush taking a lead of 3-0 into the locker room at half time.

In the third quarter, QB Mitch Pryzbocki found Derek Jean open, and completed a picture-perfect pass to him that produced the first touchdown. Kyni Scott, who had 165 yards on the night from 19 carries, locked it up when he shot through a gap and ran fifty yards for another TD, putting the score at 16-0. Throughout the game, the right side of the offensive line — Skrobola, Jimenez and Vivienzo — were able to open things up for the running backs. Matt Santos got the third touchdown with nine minutes left on the clock.

Coach Wright was pleased with the overall effort. "The team is gelling really well. We looked like we were in good shape. We were aggressive and very physical the whole game."

Pryzbocki finished with 3 of 6 for 115 yards and 1 TD. Scott had 165 yards and a TD. Santos had 100 yards on 18 carries and a TD.

Looking forward, the Bushmen face their toughest opponent of the season, the Monroe Woodbury Crusaders, this Friday at 7 p.m. Coach Wright acknowledges that it will be a tough game.

"We take that game very seriously, because it's them and because they're the best in the state. They're well coached, they're disciplined, and they've got talent in many positions."

Keeping a lid on star QB Danny Scalo will be really tough. Scalo was ranked in the National Top 50 Junior players this year. He has speed to spare, will run at the slightest opportunity, and has great passing ability too.

"Containing Scalo is really important," says Wright. "Needless to say, we're going to have to be at our very best to beat them."
