Notes From The ArtsWAVE Meeting: Saturday, March 8, 2008

Opening Statement
The meeting began with a statement from Judy Sigunick, outgoing Visual Arts Director for the Village of Ellenville. She encouraged all who were in attendance to visit the MarketStreet Art Center where visiting clay artist Tim Rowan and Steve Rossi will have a slide show and exhibit their works in progress.

Henry Hudson Quadricentennial - 2009 Project Updates, Explore NY 400 - Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission
Sigunick stated that she is now on the committee and Nancy Donskoj is running event. 10x10x10 has been added to the festival's agenda. Quadricentennial commission members questioned whether an artist from Holland might be added to the 10x10x10. Ellenville is a participant in the festival. She said hosts are needed to have artists stay in local homes.

Wawarsing Council of Community Agencies
Sigunick has become an active member of the Wawarsing Council of Community Agencies. Sigunick said that the she will be working with Ellenville Partnership to provide classes for kids in the Marketstreet Art Center. Discussion has centered around the idea of making MarketStreet a hub of community services that would include the arts, youth programs, mentoring, recreation, meeting spaces, performance space, computer lab, etc.

Sigunick will be attending the Ellenville Wawarsing Partnership meeting on Monday, April 7 at 10 a.m. and encouraged anyone interested to attend.

ArtsWAVE Logo Contest
Marty Rabkin announced the ArtsWAVE logo contest. Those who submitted entries include Lorie Kellogg, Monica Cohen, and Chuck Davidson. Rabkin recommended that Davidson's design be accepted by the group's board of directors at their next board meeting. The arts board will review the entries, make the final decision and announce their choice at next month's meeting.

Cragsmoor 6
Money raised during this year's event will go 50/50 to ArtsWAVE and the artists. Last year it lasted 3 hours, was attended by approximately 200 spectators and raised $2,000. The silent auction had no minimum bid and was organized by Debbie Briggs.

For this year, Denise Kasell suggested that someone donate a space if the Art Center was not available. Chuck Davidson suggested the Government Center. Marty said the Shadowland Theater is hard to use when shows are running because they need to protect the sets on stage. The date is to be determined. ArtsWAVE President Iris Friedman said that she felt the Art Center would be the best space to host the event.

  New Art Space In Ellenville
Denise Kasell announced that she bought the building that used to house the Fort Lox bagel shop on Canal Street. Kasell said that she will begin renovating the building, starting with a new roof, and will be offered as a venue for art related events.

   ArtsWAVE Budget
Iris Friedman said the board is working on the legal and the financial side of the new 501c3 non-profit organization.

The Town of Wawarsing has reimbursed ArtsWAVE for all current art center bills totaling $2,988. These bills are submitted to the Town on a quarterly basis through 2008, drawing from the $10,000 grant given by the town. The money is to be used for the utilities for the arts center, the C6 event and the 501c3 application. The money in the Village of Ellenville's account is ArtsWAVE money deposited from various fundraising events and donations. The group needs to review deposits and bills paid through the village, and then be reimbursed for the remaining balance. She stated that there is nearly $4,000 in the organization's account. Friedman suggested that they delay any new events in the Arts Center until warmer weather to save on heating bills.

501c3 Non-Profit Status
Iris stated that the 501c3 application is still in process. The next step is to write up the by-laws and Debbie Briggs volunteered to work on that committee. They must incorporate and put in the application. There is a new address: ArtsWAVE, PO Box 781, Ellenville, NY 12428 and a checking account.

Market Street Arts Center
Iris said they need formal administration for the center. Linda Rogers, who is currently away, will help with the management of the space upon her return this spring.

Art Group Diversity
Russ Damsky suggested that the arts organization seek members that represent the community's racial ethnic diversity. Freidman reminded the group that they are beginning projects with the local school and expressed the feeling that such programs are a great way to get families involved with the arts.
