The Unofficial Results From Tuesday's Local Elections

Election Results Chart

Jeff Kaplan was re-elected mayor for a third term early in the evening as he defeated Republican challenger Ruben Torres by a rough count of 458 to 330.

Trustee and former Ellenville mayor Ray Younger was re-elected and brings local newcomer Francisco Oliveras with him to the board of trustees. Oliveras will be taking the place of Trustee Steve Krulick, who chose not to run in this year's election.

The upset story of the evening was Republican challenger and former Ulster County Legislator, Ed Jennings' defeat of incumbent Democrat James Dolaway for the position of Wawarsing Town Supervisor.

Terry Houck was returned to the town board with the greatest number of votes for any candidate for Wawarsing town council.

Theresa Hyatt was successful in her return to the Wawarsing Town Board as she replaces fellow Democrat, Ruth Ann Gunter who chose not to run for re-election.

Jane Eck remained in the position of town clerk and extends her streak as the longest elected official in Wawarsing's history, beating Republican challenger Dolores Peluso in her first campaign.

In Wawarsing's race for highway superintendent between Republican Gil Davis and Democratic nominee Anthony Paes, an uncertain number of outstanding absentee ballots and malfunctioning voting machines leave this race too close to call at press time. Both were challengers as current highway superintendent, Tom Slater, decided not to run for re-election.

Republican incumbent for town justice, William O'Brien ran unopposed.

In Ulster County's District 1, the Democrats held their 3 to 1 majority although there was significant change. Democratic incumbent Leonard Distel lost while Democratic newcomer to county politics, T.J. Briggs won.

The district's other Democratic incumbents, Mary Sheeley and Joe Stoeckeler Jr. won along with incumbent Republican, Sue Cummings.
