Last Friday, there was the customary hustle and bustle that always accompanied “Fish Fry-days” at local restaurant, Lock 31. But this time there was a muted quality to the evening as both patrons and staff knew that this would be the last such Friday as the restaurant portion of the bar and restaurant would be closing the next day.
Normal topics of conversation around the bar had changed from local politics, sports and gossip, with patrons asking busy waiters and waitresses what their plans were for “after”.
“It's a shame - this place closing. It really is. I love the fish and chips,” said one local resident who had come there with her husband and another couple to enjoy a final meal at what had become a regular meeting spot.
Mayor Jeff Kaplan, his wife Marla and his parents were also on hand as well as Village Judge Matt Parker who was such a regular that he earned his own dish. Town Supervisor James Dolaway and wife Denise were also there to enjoy a last meal.
At the counter, people made phone calls from their cellular phones - informing friends and family that this was their last chance, “Yo, I am at Lock 31. You know they're closing right? Want me to get you something? [Pause] You know I am getting the fish fry - I love that.”
A lot of other people did as well.
Sam Bugna, the restaurant's co-owner often said, “The 'Lock' is about the love.” Friday showed how true that was as the only things you miss are the things you really love.
Lock 31's bar will remain open for an undisclosed amount of time. Patrons can order off the bar's food menu for eat-in or takeout.
