News From The Village of Ellenville Board Meeting
Monday, July 24, 2006

  • The Board reviewed Robert Papp's property on Clinton Avenue. Mr. Papp's has received tickets since December 2005 for his noncompliance with the village's building code. Deputy Mayor Ray Younger, in particular, expressed his concerns as to the property's state of disrepair.

  • (072406-2) The Board voted to transfer $700 from the village's Police Athletic League (PAL) to its DARE Account.

  • (072406-3) The Board approved an amendment to the village budget to include $5,000 from Assemblyman Kevin Cahill's office for the purpose of community beautification.

  • (072406-4) The Board passed a resolution awarding the contract for the Hunt Memorial Building roof repair to International Contractor's Corporation for $89,400. Village Trustee Steve Krulick expressed his concern for the projected costs for renovating the entire building. Krulick said that the estimate of $2.9 million dollars for all renovations gave him "sticker shock." A discussion ensued at that point between Trustee Krulick and Mayor Kaplan as to the future of the building due to its unique arrangement with the Hunt Memorial Preservation Committee. The discussion raised the issue of renovating structural (i.e. roof) problems versus nonstructural or cosmetic renovation. Kaplan ended the discussion, saying that Trustee Krulick's concerns were valid and would be explored more fully in the future.

  • (72406-5) The Board voted to appoint Michael Dechon and Philip Brooks to 89-day appointments for the Ellenville Police Department. The appointments are meant to cover lost time by officers that are currently on leave.

  • The Board also accepted the resignation of part-time Police Officer Steven Brooks. Mayor Jeff Kaplan stated that the Board accepted the resignation with regret and appreciation for his service.

  • The Board expressed its appreciation for the actions of the Street Department and EPD during the power outage that occurred during the morning of Saturday, July 22, 2006.

  • Prompted by reports of several accidents, the Board opened a dialogue to consider placing a new street light at the intersection of White Street, Canal Street and Ulster Heights Road. Chief of Police Phil Mattracion reported that Wilson's Market, located at the intersection in question, is strongly in favor of the light. The Board will consult with the DOT to consider the possibility of erecting a light. The Board will draft a letter to the DOT citing the many complaints and concerns of village residents. The intersection did possess a light in the 1970's.

  • The Board voted to accept Sprague and Killeen's quote for insuring the village. The total is $110,403.48.

  • The Board also requested that any village employee cited for a moving violation report the incident within 48 hours. The request for notification is for the Board's insurance purposes.
