News From The Town of Wawarsing Board Meeting
Monday, July 24, 2006

  • The Board voted down a resolution to authorize the spending of up to $10,000 to finance a site study for the Provident Bank's five (5) floor office building. The building appears to be the future home of Ellenville's village offices. The village has tried to bring the Town of Wawarsing into the venture but a majority of board members have expressed reluctance at the prospect of moving. Town Councilwoman Ruth Ann Gunter and Town Councilman John Gavaris wished to make it clear that their voting against the site study expenditure did not close the door for the town's possible future move into the office building.

However, other members of the board (Thomas Geelan, Terry Houck and Supervisor James Dolaway) had varying degrees of disinterest in the move citing the existence of many other town projects and recent upgrades to the current Town Hall as reasons to remain in their current location.

Of the dozen or so Town residents that attended the meeting, all of them felt that the move to join the Village of Ellenville was a bad idea – and they were not shy about expressing their opinions. In fact, tempers got a little hot as several people kept asking the question, "Why should the Town bail the Village out?" The question brought to light a certain friction that seems to exist between the Town and Village. The resolution was unanimously voted down to applause from those assembled. But the cordial nature of the moment did not last as the night went on.

An exchange between the Board and audience grew particularly unfriendly when an older gentleman yelled at the Board to vote on a resolution. Councilwoman Gunter, who had been trying to clarify a particular issue, responded by saying, "Sir, if you have somewhere else to be, there's the door." At that, Supervisor Dolaway asked Gunter to remain polite. She responded to the admonishment by asking Dolaway why she had to be polite if she was being treated in a disrespectful manner.

  • The Board voted to rescind Resolution #8, approved during the April 6, 2006 meeting, authorizing the Supervisor to execute a $600,000 lease agreement with Municipal Services Group, Inc.

The reason for rescinding the resolution was due to the fact that the Town had gone beyond its deadline to gather its financial information and the lease agreement window had expired. The vote lead to an exchange between Councilman Houck and Supervisor Dolaway:

    Houck: "You have to prioritize."
Dolaway: "I have a lot of priorities."
Houck: "Yeah, but none of them [priorities] seem to be getting done."
    Dolaway: "They all take time."
  • The Board approved the expenses for Town Justice William O'Brien to attend classes offered for Magistrates in Potsdam, NY from July 23-25, 2006. The expenses for lodging and mileage are approximately $350.00.

  • The Board approved the Kerhonkson Fire Department's closing of Main Street in Kerhonkson on August 27, 2006 from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for their 5th Annual Street Fair which will include a craft fair, flea market, custom car and truck show, and a chicken barbecue.

  • The Board approved Stacie Wright for the provisional position of Account Clerk in the Assessor's Office. Ms. Wright will have to take the next Account Clerks test given by Ulster County and score in the top three to be achieve a permanent Account Clerk position for the Town.

  • The Board approved a joint meeting between the Village of Ellenville and the Town of Wawarsing for August 10, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. at Town Hall. The meeting will be an opportunity for Town and Village officials to discuss various issues of mutual concern.

  • The Town approved $585.00 for the photographic artwork known as "The Urban Cliff", which will be placed on the exterior, west of the Town Hall's elevator shaft.

  • The Board approved the establishing of a gazebo for the Ellenville-Wawarsing Chamber of Commerce to be placed in the parking lot behind the Town Hall. The structure will be twelve feet in diameter and is being funded through a micro-grant from the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, Inc.
