New York State Senator John J. Bonacic Stops By For Ulster Heights Day
State Senator John J. Bonacic dressed casually and was clearly enjoying the food, people and festivities of Ulster Heights Day. A soft summer rain began to fall as he sat down for a quick chat with the Ellenville Journal.
When asked about taking time away from his busy schedule to come to the small hamlet of Ulster Heights, Bonacic said, “I love the drive and the rural nature of my district. Having time to meet the people is an important part of doing my job.”
Concerning his work as it relates to Ellenville, Bonacic quickly pointed out the recent success of Ellenville Regional Hospital (ERH). Bonacic explained that he always supported the hospital, even though it has had serious financial difficulties. Bonacic said he always felt that it was essential to have a hospital in Ellenville. One reason for his support was his concern that the distance to the next closest hospital would put lives at risk. After some turbulent times, Bonacic is glad to report that the hospital was moving forward and that the number of people using the facility was on the rise.

Bonacic then explained that what was foremost on his agenda was the devastating floods that occurred earlier in the month, dumping fourteen inches of rain on the area, causing millions of dollars in damages and leaving four people dead.
He blamed weak infrastructure for the tragedy and said, “I am asking the federal government to bring millions of dollars to make safe the areas effected.” As chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing, Construction and Community Development and a Senate Representative on Governor Pataki's Small Cities Advisory Committee, Senator Bonacic should be in a position to achieve his goals.
State Senator John J. Bonacic represents the 42nd district, which includes the counties of Delaware, Sullivan and Ulster as well as part of Orange. He has held the post since first being elected in 1998.
